Understanding Your Brain Health with the Brain Gauge

Your brain changes throughout your life. Whether you're recovering from a concussion, dealing with brain fog, or concerned about memory, it's important to know how your brain is functioning, not just how it looks on a scan.

That's where the Brain Gauge comes in.

The Brain Gauge is a small device that uses gentle vibrations on your fingertips to measure how well your brain processes information. It gives us an objective way to track your brain health and monitor your progress over time.

Even better, it doesn't just measure your brain, it can help train it, too.

How Can Your Fingers Tell Us About Your Brain?

It might sound surprising, but your fingertips are directly connected to areas of your brain that process touch.

When the Brain Gauge sends tiny vibrations to your fingers, it stimulates two adjacent areas of your sensorimotor cortex, the part of the brain that processes touch and movement.  Those neurons then communicate with each other to process the sensation.  Looking at how the neurons interact allows us to measure how well the networks in your brain are functioning at a very foundational level.

Questions are simple, like:

  • Which vibration was stronger?

  • Which happened first?

  • Did you feel one vibration or two?

Your answers tell us how quickly and accurately your brain is processing information.

Why Is This Important?

Brain scans like MRIs and CT scans show us what your brain looks like.

The Brain Gauge tells us how your brain is working.

Sometimes a brain can look perfectly normal on a scan but still struggle to process information efficiently.  Imagine taking a picture of a faulty car engine and trying to diagnose what’s wrong without ever cranking the ignition.  You need to see what the brain is doing, not just what it looks like.  The Brain Gauge helps us detect these subtle changes and track improvement over time.

This helps us personalize your treatment and see whether your therapies are making a difference.

Train Your Brain with Brain Gauge Gym

The Brain Gauge isn't just a testing device.

It also includes Brain Gauge Gym, a collection of simple computer-based exercises designed to challenge your brain.

Think of it like going to the gym, but for your brain.

Just as your muscles get stronger through regular exercise, your brain becomes more efficient when you practice consistently.

We typically recommend using Brain Gauge Gym for about 20 minutes a day, 5–7 days each week.

What Can Brain Training Improve?

As your brain becomes more efficient, many people notice improvements in everyday life, including:

  • Faster reaction time

  • Better focus and attention

  • Improved sensory processing

  • Less mental fatigue

Everyone's progress is different, but consistent practice gives your brain the best opportunity to improve.

How We Use It in Our Neurorehab Program

Think of it as both an assessment tool and a set of rehab exercises.  We begin by measuring your current brain function to establish a baseline, then we recommend training with the device at home alongside a more comprehensive medical approach to over brain health.

As you continue both precision medical treatments and regular brain exercises, we repeat the assessment to see how your brain is responding.

This allows us to:

  • Track your progress objectively

  • Adjust your treatment when needed

  • Measure whether therapies are working

  • Show improvements over time

Instead of guessing, we can follow real data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Brain Gauge?

The Brain Gauge is a small, non-invasive device that measures how your brain processes touch using gentle vibrations on your fingertips.

Does it hurt?

No. The vibrations are very gentle and painless.

How long does testing take?

A full assessment usually takes about 15–20 minutes.

Do I need to prepare?

No special preparation is needed. Simply rest your fingers on the device and answer a few easy questions on the screen.

What does it measure?

The Brain Gauge evaluates several important aspects of brain function, including processing speed, attention, accuracy, timing, fatigue, and your brain's ability to adapt and learn.

How is it different from an MRI?

An MRI looks at the structure of your brain.

The Brain Gauge measures your brain's function, how efficiently different parts of your brain communicate and process information.

Can it actually improve my brain?

Yes. In addition to testing, the Brain Gauge includes Brain Gauge Gym, which provides exercises designed to train and strengthen the brain systems involved in processing information. Like physical exercise, the greatest improvements come with regular practice.

What conditions can benefit from Brain Gauge?

Brain Gauge can be useful for people experiencing:

- Cognitive decline

- Brain fog

- Concussions and traumatic brain injuries

- Memory concerns

- Neurological conditions

- Anyone wanting to monitor and improve brain performance

How do you use it during treatment?

We test your brain at the beginning of your program and periodically throughout treatment. This helps us monitor your progress, guide therapy decisions, and measure improvements over time.

Support Your Brain with the Neuronic Device

As part of our Neurorehab program, we offer the Neuronic device, a comfortable, wearable helmet that uses infrared light to support brain health.

The therapy is safe, painless, drug-free, and completely non-invasive.

The Neuronic device delivers near-infrared light to the brain through a process called photobiomodulation. Its goal is simple: help your brain cells produce more energy so they can function, repair, and adapt more efficiently.

We often combine the Neuronic device with other therapies, such as the Brain Gauge training, vascular and mitochondrial support, and genomic guided interventions to optimize your brain health from multiple directions.

What Is Photobiomodulation?

Every cell in your body needs energy to do its job, including the cells in your brain.

As we age, or after illness or injury, brain cells may not produce energy as efficiently as they once did.

Photobiomodulation uses light to stimulate an enzyme (cytochrome c oxidase) in the mitochondria.  These are the tiny energy-producing structures inside all your cells, including the brain.  Think of it a little like a backup solar charger for the cells.

This  can sound farfetched, but it’s not that different from the way chlorophyll converts light energy into chemical energy in plants.  Humans aren’t plants, but our cells can still benefit from light.  In this case we’re using near-infrared light to penetrate more deeply through the skull.

This helps your brain create more of the fuel it needs for everyday activities like thinking, learning, and healing.

Research also suggests this therapy may improve blood flow to the brain, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients where they're needed.

Think of it as giving your brain cells a little extra energy to do their job.

What Can It Help With?

Photobiomodulation is being studied for many neurological conditions. While research is ongoing, studies suggest it may help support people experiencing:

  • Brain fog

  • Mental fatigue

  • Memory concerns

  • Cognitive decline

  • Stroke recovery

  • Post-chemo neuropathy

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)

Some studies have also found improvements in attention, memory, processing speed, and quality of life in people with mild to moderate cognitive impairment.

Why We Combine It with Brain Training

The Neuronic device is a passive therapy- you simply wear the helmet while it works.

The Brain Gauge is an active therapy- it challenges your brain through exercises.

We often recommend using them together.

Think of it this way:

  • The Neuronic helps give your brain cells the energy they need.

  • The Brain Gauge gives your brain something meaningful to practice.

One helps prepare the brain, while the other helps strengthen it.

Many of our patients wear the Neuronic helmet while completing their 20-minute Brain Gauge session so both therapies work synergistically.

A Tool to Support Brain Health

Photobiomodulation is not a cure for Alzheimer's disease or other neurological conditions.

Instead, it is an evidence-based therapy that may help support brain function, encourage recovery, and complement other treatments as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Our goal is to give your brain the best possible environment to learn, heal, and adapt.

STILL NOT SURE?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Neuronic device safe?

Yes. Photobiomodulation has been studied for many years and is considered a safe, non-invasive, drug-free therapy when used as directed. The Neuronic device is FDA-listed.

How often should I use it?

Most people use the device for about 20 minutes a day, five days each week. We will recommend the schedule that's best for you.

What does the light actually do?

The near-infrared light helps your brain cells produce more energy, which may support normal brain function, repair, and recovery.

Can it help with Alzheimer's disease?

Photobiomodulation is not a cure for Alzheimer's disease. However, early clinical research suggests it may help support memory, daily function, and quality of life in some people with mild to moderate cognitive decline. Research in this area continues to grow.

Why does the device pulse at 40 Hz?

The Neuronic device uses 40 Hz light because early research has show this frequency improves amyloid clearance from the brain and may support healthy brain activity. Scientists are continuing to study its potential role in cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.

Can it improve sleep?

Some studies have found improvements in sleep quality among people using photobiomodulation. Better sleep may also support overall brain health.

Can I use it at home?

Yes. After your evaluation and personalized treatment plan, most patients use their Neuronic device at home.

How does this fit into my Neurorehab program?
